Finding Balance in Uncertain Times

Getting offended when someone suggested you be grateful for what you have completely misses the point of what was offered to you. The same is true when you ask someone what they miss most when they are “stuck at home.”

I am not making light of the real struggles that many are facing, especially those that are in physical and/or emotional danger and have nowhere else to turn or who are facing financial uncertainty. My point is that we are all in this together, and together we rise or fall. For those that can choose, it saddens me that the choice is to focus on what is missing or lost by staying home.

I am far from perfect, and perhaps greatly naive, yet I choose to see the good in the situation and be thankful for what I have at this very moment. I choose to be thankful for the things I can control, especially having my husband and daughters all under one roof with me. We are adjusting and in the process we are learning the importance of clear communication and boundaries.

My personal journey through these tough times involves navigating emotions that go from content to anxious. My guess is many of you feel the same way. How to find balance in a world turned upside down? Close your eyes and take a deep breath.

Name four things that are important to you at this moment. Write them down and say them out loud.

Notice your shoulders and your breath.

Time to ask yourself if your body, mind and breath are restored when you pay attention to the things that are important to you.

The negative thoughts and feelings are never going to go away. Balance can be found when you explore what is important to you and how you react when faced with things that are less important.

Whatever path you choose, be gentle and understanding with yourself. There is not any type of “quick fix.” As I like to say, the journey of life is a marathon, not a sprint. In this journey you will move forward and step backwards. You have the power to take control of the things within your control.

Enjoy the journey!
